Why aren’t the full monologues on the blog?
Copyright. That’s your one word answer anyway. Because I didn’t write the monologues they are not mine to give out. I CAN however, guide you to plays that have what you are looking for.
Should I read the play my monologue is from?
Yes, yes and oh did I say this already? YES! Part of me (an itty, bitty, tiny, winy, tinsy, winsy part) is somewhat glad I don’t have the full monologues on here because it forces you to get your hands on the dang play. READ IT! Trust me it will better inform you about the context of the monologue and generally improve your knowledge of plays.
Ok I get it. I should read the play. But where do I get it?
This is the part that can get tricky. Especially if you’re not rolling in the dough. But fear not! I’ve got a couple of places to get the goods!
- Buy new from the publisher. (Duh! Most expensive, but you’ll get it.)
- Buy new from amazon. (Sometimes they have deals if you have prime, but most of the time you’ll pay full price.)
- Buy used from amazon, bigwords.com (little known website that is super awesome), or other used book websites.
- Visit your school or local library. (Sometimes you get lucky. If you feel like “treasure hunting” check it out.)
- Ask a friend, classmate or professor/teacher. (Ask nicely and remember to return it when you’re done!)
How long is a short, medium, and long monologue?
- Short – less than a minute
- Medium – 1 minute to 3 minutes
- Long – longer than 3 minutes
What do you mean when you say “Monologue times are an estimate” at the bottom of the monologue chart?
It means exactly that. The time I have assigned to that monologue is estimated. I basically read the monologue as straightforward as possible to get a base time and leave a 30 second cushion.
Can I make a monologue shorter than the estimated time?
You could technically. However, due to the nature of my timing system I wouldn’t suggest trying to make a monologue shorter than the estimated time. It might make you sound rushed and why do that to yourself when there are plenty of other monologues out there!
Can I make a monologue longer than the estimated time?
Sure! I’d rather have someone take a little more time with a monologue than race through it. Take those pauses, make those silent realizations, live in the moment.
What does it mean when “N/A” is in a column (Age, Act and Scene, etc.) on the monologue chart?
If there is an “N/A” in a column that means that the playwright didn’t give specific information or the play just doesn’t have it. Some examples are plays don’t have multiple acts or the playwright didn’t give an age range within the character description.
